Years 8–11
GCSE Study Skills
Coaching in how to revise, how to sit an exam, and how marks are won and lost — from someone who did it last year, not a decade ago.
Taught by Anushka, who took ten grade 9s at Northwood College for Girls and is going on to A levels in Chemistry, Biology, Psychology and Maths at Watford Grammar School for Girls. She sat these papers last summer and coaches the techniques that earned those marks, focused on the subjects she took herself.
What the sessions cover
How marks are actually awarded
Most students lose marks they already knew how to get. We work through mark schemes and examiner reports so your child can see what a full-mark answer contains and what a near-miss left out.
Revision that holds
Retrieval practice, spacing and self-testing, applied to your child’s actual specification rather than described in the abstract. Re-reading notes feels productive and is not — we replace it with methods that stick.
Exam-room technique
Reading the paper, allocating time per mark, choosing which question to start with, and what to do when the first two minutes go badly. The difference between knowing the content and performing under timed conditions.
Structuring longer answers
Planning extended responses so the argument is visible to a marker working quickly. Applies across essay subjects and to the longer-mark questions in the sciences.
A term plan, not a panic
A realistic schedule from now to the exam, built around what else is in the week. Reviewed as mocks come back so it reflects where the marks are actually being lost.
What this is not
This is coaching in technique rather than subject teaching. If your child needs someone to teach quadratic equations or electrolysis from scratch, this is not that — and we would rather say so now than in session one.
What it does include is learning guidance and structured learning support: what to work on, in what order, and how to keep it going between sessions.
It works best alongside subject teaching, or for a student who knows the content but isn’t converting it into marks.
We can provide teaching up to GCSE in a number of subjects. Please enquire — we will confirm once it is available and add your child to the waiting list in the meantime.
